'A Burst of Colour' by Douglas Young
Following the 'Copper Towers' and 'Red Market Lantern' exhibits at Hong Kong Art Fair 2010 and 2011, 'A Burst of Colour' is the third in a series of Hong Kong icons with a twist.
There was a time when Hong Kong was the centre of the plastic toy industry and the unassuming water pistol, a colourful icon. Its lurid colours and cheap quality is a far cry from the world of art, but nothing succeeds like excess. By putting the pistols in a new context, they are able to develop a different (and more positive) appeal. Just like Hong Kong itself, the attraction is the result of its inherent contradictions.
