'The Mahjong Lounge' by Douglas Young

The theme that always run through Young’s work has been his take on contemporary local culture. Through manipulations in scale and materials, he places ordinary everyday objects in new contexts. The resulting work is at once familiar and strange

This year, Young has been inspired by the popular local pastime of 'Mahjong'. By enlarging the pieces to an unprecedented scale, visitors enter a surreal experience. Details that would normally be overlooked such as the carving and the graphics now become suddenly very prominent. The viewer is thus able to appreciate a familiar object in a new degree of consciousness.

The 'Mahjong' tiles made a reappearance at the Hong Kong Classic Car and Vintage Festival in November 2014.
