A sampan is an old-fashioned wooden boat. The word 'sampan' translates to 'three planks' referring to the flat bottom plank plus the two planks joint at the hull sides. Although mostly replaced by motor boats or ferries these days, sampans are still used in Hong Kong for passengers traveling between piers and large vessels.
