As summer finally arrives in the city, everyone is gearing up for junk season. A junk boat trip is one of Hong Kong's favourite outdoor pastimes. Who can say no to a sun soaked day, sailing on the sea, in the company of friends and family; with delicious food and free-flowing drinks. Cruising in the subtropical heat really is the perfect way to unwind and escape the bustling city for the day. What should you pack for a junk trip? How do you keep cool in the heat? And what shoes should you wear? We have put together a list of our Junk Packing Essentials

1) Carry All Bag

Keep everything you need handy and organised in a carry all tote bag. Small enough to tuck under one arm and big enough that you can throw everything you need in there. Our canvas tote bags come in large or small size with a zip to stop anything from slipping out. With nine patterns to choose from, there is something for everyone.

2) Flip Flops

Waterproof and easy to slip on and off. Flip flops are the no-brainer choice for boating footwear.

3) Scarves

Scarves are so versatile and can be used in so many ways. Wrapped around as a cover-up or sarong, keep it over your shoulders to avoid getting burnt, or used it a head scarf to prevent wind swept hair.

4) Swimwear

Duhhh, obviously! Change into your swimsuit and go cannon ball into the ocean off the top deck!

5) Sunblock, Hat and Sunglasses

Protect yourself from the summer sun especially when the sun's rays are reflected off the sea while you are on board. To avoid getting burnt, stay out of the midday sun and remember to reapply sunblock every few hours or after you have been swimming.

6) Change of clothes

After a fun filled day at sea, the journey back to the pier is usually spent snoozing and applying aloe vera after a lack of applying sunblock! The last thing you want is catch a cold traveling home wearing sticky wet clothes. Always bring a change of clothes like a comfortable t-shirt and baggy drawstring trousers to change into just before you disembark the boat.

Junk trips are a great day out, if you haven't already, get yourself onto one this summer. Step on board, set sail, explore new horizons and try not to get too sun burnt!
