This book with 24 detachable postcards is a memento of the exhibition Classics Remix: The Hong Kong Viewpoint, held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art from November 2019 to October 2020. For her site-specific installation Beyond, sculptor Rosanna Li Wei Han staged an every-day diorama on each sill of the museum’s fifth-floor windows. On their perch above Victoria Harbour, her plump protagonists play chess, bet on the races, collect cardboard, and gaze into the boundless ocean and vast sky beyond the window—following the sage advice of Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei, "When it gets to the end of the waters, take a seat and watch the clouds roam".
Li’s depictions of simple folks are filled with wit and humour, reflecting her keen sensitivity to language, people, and events in the community. “I love reading Hong Kong street names. [They] always get me thinking and imagining…I seem to see Vincent Van Gogh standing outside Dutch Desserts in Kennedy Town, Mr Nobody working hard for a living on Power Street in North Point, and renowned Peking opera master Mei Lanfang enjoying a drink at Lan Fong Cafe in Causeway Bay! What scenery would it make when these ‘settings’ are placed against the waterfront of Victoria Harbour?”
Rediscover the delightful details with these postcards, each accompanied by a brief story on the back. Send them to friends to share the thoughtful witticism of Li’s works, or display them in your own space to enjoy and remember.
