Quantity Has A Quality In Itself by Douglas Young
Following the Copper Towers and Red Market Lantern exhibits at Hong Kong Art Fair 2010 and 2011, Quantity Has A Quality In Itself is the third in a series of Hong Kong icons with a twist.
There was a time when Hong Kong was the centre of the plastic toy industry and the unassuming water pistol, a colourful icon. Its lurid colours and cheap quality is a far cry from the world of art, but nothing succeeds like excess. By putting the pistols in a new context, they are able to develop a different (and more positive) appeal. Just like Hong Kong itself, the attraction is the result of its inherent contradictions.
